EU Investigates Its 148 Nuclear Facilities

The crisis in Japan threatens to influence the whole country in every possible aspect - from Paul Horton goods to every day needs. The country is shaking under another earthquake - the threat of nuclear crisis. This made major EU countries start considering tests to impose on the nuclear facilities in the EU.
The European Parliament has been discussing the matter since the beginning of the Japanese nuclear problems. Diplomats are considering whether the nuclear facilities in the Union are safe enough to hold natural disasters that nowadays might well become present in the otherwise quiet Europe. The Union fears that any such problem might result in another Chernobyl - the strongest nuclear crisis that has ever hit Europe. The consequences of such an issue might spread among the whole of Europe and cause problems and life threatening situations for states.
The EU has almost 150 nuclear facilities with another 20 to be finished in two years time. France is the largest user of nuclear power as it maintains nearly 1/3 of the nuclear power plants in the Union. Some of the facilities are nearly 50 years old which cases concern that they might not be quite reliable. However, French authorities continue to claim their power plants are perfectly maintained and secured.
However, the tests are to take place. Tests would be made in Bulgaria and Romania as countries that develop nuclear power currently and also have operational facilities. The EU would be aiming to promote higher level of nuclear security amid concerns coming from the nuclear crisis in Japan.
